Dr. Dre was at the center of the Grand Theft Auto Online’s The Contract expansion, but the hip-hop icon originally had no intentions of getting involved.
In a talk with BET Music, rapper, producer and GTA Online co-author DJ Pooh said that Dre, who did not fully understand what GTA was, did not want to make music or perform in something intended for children.
“At first it was just ‘no’, but that’s the normal answer you get from Dre,” he said. “Dre is not a gamer. He just did not play any of the games. It’s not like he does not like them or anything, he just did not play them. He was like, ‘I do not do things for children’. “
As a big fan of games himself, Plys took his PlayStation to Dres’ mansion and showed him the game in action.
“He was blown away. He did not know you could do all these things,” said Plush. “He was like, ‘this thing is amazing,’ and he sees me driving around in a lowrider. We out here put different rims on the car, get into a shootout, hang out with my friends.”
When he saw that the game was not just a children’s toy and that he was told about GTA’s history with music and its incredible sales figures, Dre was convinced.
The contract update was released in December and sees Franklin instruct the player to chase new music by Dre that was released specifically for GTA.
The project was heavily rumored for a while prior to release, and many thought Dre was making music for GTA 6. That does not mean he does not want to, but the only thing Rockstar Games has said for sure about the new game is, that it is under development.
