Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has just released a brief statement on Twitter, saying that the upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated films will no longer be released this year.
The film, which has not yet been officially named and which has not released a single promotional image, was originally slated to hit theaters on December 21st. However, it will now be released in April 2023:
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. movie, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023-28. April in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies, but I promise it will be worth the wait.
Unfortunately, “Chris-san” is not Chris Pratt, but rather Chris Meledandri, CEO and founder of Illumination, the animation studio – behind Despicable Me–it makes the movie.
It’s far from now, but also a little explains why except for a bang of casting announcementswe have practically not seen or heard anything about this film since it was first announced.
Feel free to make your own “A delayed movie is gradually good, but a hasty film is forever bad ”quotes below, but when you do keep in mind that the original quote is probably something Miyamoto actually never said!
By the way, I’m a big fan of this tweet. Nintendo of America’s twitter account is usually a very formal, structured one place, home to careful levels of planning and public relations work. It sounds like Miyamoto just grabbed the microphone out of someone hands for a partyor such as the President him too has a big red phone on his desk, only this one transcribes tweets and can override all regional Nintendo account passwords.
So while this news itself is disappointing, please, Nintendo, give more senior executives and developers space to throw personal tweets on
