It’s always a good idea to keep your Android apps up to date to make sure you have the latest security and bug fixes. Additionally, you may miss out on newly added features.
If you have not enabled automatic updates, you will need to manually update your apps from the Google Play Store. Here we show you how to update individual apps, as well as how to enable automatic updates.
Keep in mind that not all Android devices have the same layout. We made this guide using a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 running Android 10 so you can have a slightly different experience depending on the device you have.
Manually update your apps
You can update your apps one by one or all at once from the Google Play Store. Here’s how to do both:
- Go to the Google Play Store and select your profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
- choose Manage apps and deviceand then select Updates available possibility.
- From here you can see a list of apps that need to be updated. choose Update option next to each app you want to update.
- To update all your apps at once, select Update all at the top of the screen.
Enables automatic updates
When you enable automatic updates, apps download updates in the background. This means you do not have to keep checking the Google Play Store for new updates. Follow these steps to enable automatic updates for all or all of your apps:
- Open the Google Play Store and click on your profile icon in the top right corner of the screen.
- Press Settings> Network preferences> Automatic update of apps.
- From here you will see a few different options. Choose Wi-Fi only to download updates when connected to Wi-Fi and not on a mobile network. There is also Over any network option, which means that downloads will be done via Wi-Fi and mobile data. This option is best if you have an unlimited mobile data subscription. Otherwise, app updates can use a large portion of your data.
- To disable automatic updates completely, select Do not update apps automatically.
You can also enable automatic updates on individual apps instead of all of them. Here’s how you do it:
- Open the Google Play Store and select your profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
- choose Manage apps and deviceand then press Manage tab at the top.
- Tap the app for which you want to enable automatic updates.
- Select the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen, then make sure Enable automatic updating is checked. You can also deselect this field to disable the feature.
