According to Google, Google has unveiled a complete redesign of the Android Auto user interface, which runs in more than 150 million cars. The update aims to simplify hands-free operation for drivers and accommodate what are often much larger screens in newer cars. The updated look includes making the split-screen display standard, with navigation, entertainment and communication information visible at the same time, as well as enhancing Google Assistant’s suggestions for actions and activities based on context.
Large screen context
The split screen with all the most commonly checked information available means drivers do not have to push through menus to change their music or view the map at the same time, and they or a passenger can pause or change any of the services more quickly. There is no longer a need for a home screen. In addition, the design update can be adapted to different screen sizes so that it works regardless of the type of infotainment unit in the vehicle.
The new version of Android Auto also upgrades Google Assistant. The voice assistant will incorporate context to come up with suggestions for drivers. For example, an incoming message may cause the AI to suggest an answer, while setting the home navigation may cause Google Assistant to offer to share the estimated time of arrival with a spouse or even an idea for music to listen to along the way. The Android Auto makeover follows the more subtle addition of smart answers and voice-activated music searches at the end of last year. The new interface also pairs with Google’s updated look for Android Driving Mode, released last summer, albeit on a larger scale.
“Our work with cars has always been guided by our goal of helping make your driving experience easier and safer,” Android Auto senior product manager Rod Lopez explained in a blog post. “In addition to using your voice, you can now quickly send messages and call favorite contacts with just a single touch and reply to messages by simply selecting a suggested answer on the screen – which helps you communicate effectively while you can hold eyes on the road. “
