Pixel 6 makes the simple act of turning off your device difficult, but here are some helpful tips
Android phones evolved from physical navigation buttons to virtual ones before dropping them all in favor of movements in Android 10. But the volume and on / off buttons have remained to this day – and their functions are largely set in stone on this time, or are they?
With Pixel 6, Google tried to recreate the power button. Instead of opening the power menu, it activates Google Assistant – though there are already five other ways to do so. But this is not the first time Google has tried something new with the power button. On previous Pixel phones running Android 11, the action could open a view with your Google Pay cards and some Google Home device controls.
Google has changed things a bit with its latest phones, but there are still many options. So here’s how to turn off your Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro without the lock button.
With the physical on / off button transformed, Google introduced a new (albeit virtual) button for the phones. And even though it’s not as accessible as the standard button, it’s about as direct as you can get. To change it:
-
Iron down from at the top of the screen to open the notifications panel.
-
Swipe down on the notification area to reveal Quick settings menu.
-
Under the Quick Settings tile columns, you can see three buttons: the left pencil icon, the right Settings gear button and the middle power button.
-
Press middle button to open the power menu.
-
You can then turn off the phone or restart it.
There you have it. It may not be the same as tapping the side of your phone, but it’s still easy to access. You can use a stream nerve motion if you want an even faster method.
You can turn off your Pixel 6 directly from the Quick Settings menu, but the on / off menu movement is lightning fast. In fact, it may be faster than using the physical button that requires you to press and hold. To open the power menu:
-
Press volume up and lock buttons at the same time. If done correctly, you should see the power menu open immediately.
-
You can then turn off the phone or restart it.
It is important to note that you must press the volume up and lock buttons at the same time for this trick to work. It may take a few tries if you are not used to it.
Turn off your Pixel 6 with Google Assistant
With Pixel 6 and Android 12, Google introduced a new Assistant feature that allows you to open the phone’s on / off menu with a voice command. How to access it:
-
Activate Google Assistant by long press lock buttonby tapping the Google search bar microphone iconor says “Hey Google”.
-
Say “Power off” to open the power menu.
-
You can then turn off your Pixel 6 or restart it.

Google may have introduced some new methods to turn off the Pixel 6, but it would not be Android if there was no way to return to the previous method. So if none of the new ones tease you, then switch back to the old way here:
-
open Settings app.
-
Push System.
-
Navigate to Gesture.
-
find Press and hold the power button bottom of the page.
-
You will see a single option that says Hold for assistant.
- Disable it and you will be able to open your Pixel 6s power menu by long pressing the power button.
You have the power now
There are several ways to turn off your Pixel 6. Follow the tips mentioned above to find the one that works best for you. Alternatively, you can transform the lock button completely to return to the good old fashioned way. Either way, the way to turn off your Pixel 6 is in your hands.
Now that you have learned how to turn off one of the best Android phones, you can find one of the best Pixel 6 covers or Pixel 6 Pro covers to make your experience even better.
