Google is always looking to improve the overall perception of security and privacy on its mobile operating system. The latest effort is called “Protected by Android”, and that branding seems to be getting a wider rollout.
The Android YouTube channel today uploaded a 50-second video on how the operating system “is about keeping you and your information safe so you can focus on what matters most.” Still images of people using smartphones – presumably Android-powered, but we’m pretty sure there’s one of an iPhone 8 Plus at 0:05 – with short captions used everywhere:
From discovering and defeating bad apps to helping you control your privacy, you are always protected by Android.
A clever animation sees the green Android head turn into a ticked shield: “Whatever you do, you have peace of mind when you are protected by Android.” Highlighted platform and ecosystem features include:
- Verified by Play Protect: “You are safe from malware and malicious apps”
- Monthly security updates: “The defense of non-stop security”
- Location access permissions: “And have control over your personal information”
The concluding tagline is “Android has you covered so you can focus on what matters,” while there’s a link to protectedbyandroid.com, even if it’s just redirecting to android.com/safety.
In addition to this announcement, at I / O 2022, Google showed Android 13’s upcoming unified “Security and Privacy” settings page. Under the prominent “Scan device” button, there is the same “Protected by Android” branding and shield.
The site will be anchored by new action cards that inform you of critical steps you should take to address any security risks. In addition to notifications to alert you to problems, we also provide timely recommendations on how to improve your privacy.
