PS4 Remaster of PS2 Cult Classic this summer

A remaster of a PS2 cult classic is coming out this summer, and it’s not surprising that the remake is being released via PS4. What’s surprising is that it’s not released via PS5, but it’s coming to the Nintendo Switch. Fortunately, for PlayStation fans migrating from PS4 to PS5, the game will be able to be played on the latter via backward compatibility. Why the game will not come to PS5, we do not know, but it is possible that the port will be saved for a post-launch.

As for that game, it’s baptized GrimGrimoire Again and it’s a remaster of GrimGrimoire, a real-time strategy game from 2007 from Vanillaware, the developer behind the highest rated Nintendo Switch game so far this year. Published by Nippon Ichi Software or Koei depending on the region, GrimGrimoire was an exclusive PS2 when it was released, and years later the PS2 is still the only platform it can be played on. After its release, the game scored 79 on Metacritic, which is far from the best Metacritic score, but over time it became known as a bit of a cult classic among hardcore PlayStation fans.

As for the remaster, it will be released on July 28, but only in Japan. It’s safe to assume the game is coming west at some point, but this has not been confirmed yet. Meanwhile, the remaster is handled by the aforementioned Nippon Ichi Software and Vanillaware. In other words, the original parties have returned.

The re-release is specifically released as an “improved remaster”, and it comes with new gameplay systems, improved graphics, a fast-forward feature, a mid-battle save feature, a new “hard” difficulty level, a new skill tree, and a gallery state. What this is not is a remake. The game still looks old, but it has shaken off some of the PS2 dust.
