Indie developer Fireblade Software has announced a new game, Sentry, for the 2023 release. In Sentry, you are a defender trying to save a human ship while fleeing a defeated land, pursued by alien threats. When the aliens overtake your ship, you must fight in a dynamic defensive campaign that sees you hold the enemy from different ship systems. The combination of First-Person Shooter and Tower Defense can remind you of classic to something Sanctum.
The dynamic campaigns sound particularly interesting as you can do it alone or with a friend. “Do you want to decide to destroy a smaller force and prevent them from seizing a crucial subsystem? Or do you risk facing overwhelming odds that prevent a major enemy from advancing and blunt their main advance?”, The game description states. There is also a stated emphasis on intelligent enemies, which is a change from most of the action tower defense genre.
Furthermore, the idea in the game is that defeat can be undermined. If you fail, another warrior is awakened from stasis to continue the fight so you can continue the overall strategic situation as it is after your loss. “There will be more short and replayable campaigns with sustained upgrades for use in future runs,” the developers say.
Sentry will be released on Steam Early Access in 2023 and intends to stay in Early Access for 9-12 months. Fireblade Software were former developers of the FTL-like Abandon Ship, which we enjoyed writing a lot about.
