It has already been a bumper year for mergers and acquisitions in the gaming industry. From Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard to Sony snatching Bungie, it’s not surprising that there are those who are desperately trying to stay ahead of the news cycle and come up with hints as to which companies might be buying shares in each other lately. . One such person is game analyst and consultant Dr. Serkan Toto, who threw something of a bomb at his Twitter followers today.
According to Toto, Elden Ring developer FromSoftware is “currently being an M&A candidate for Sony.” He gives no further details, but it is not outside the scope of the possibility. FromSoft has enjoyed a huge amount of love over the last several weeks following the release of Elden Ring, the veritable golden child in the February review cycle. In addition, Sony’s Jim Ryan has been aware of the company’s intention to acquire more studios and bring them in internally, calling it a “virtuous cycle” of talent acquisition.
What this would mean for future FromSoftware games, if true, is unclear. First, it may see future titles miss out on an Xbox release, though Sony’s recent trend of releasing some of its exclusives on PC may mean they’s not limited to PlayStation. As always, however, this is only the rumor mill that is toppling at the moment, so keep an ear to the ground for further confirmation.
