The use of Steam on Linux games grew in April

VALVE -

Valve has just released the updated Steam Hardware / Software Survey results for April 2022, giving a look at the Linux market share for April among other interesting metrics.

The figures for April 2022 have been of particular interest as it was the second full month since Steam Deck began shipping to consumers and increasing production. Valve has still not been fully aware of how Steam Deck will be treated in the Steam Survey, if at all. So far, at least in my use of Steam Deck, I have not seen any Steam Survey prompt or any of the survey data changes related to Steam Deck software / hardware.

Back in March 2022, Steam on Linux hit 1.00%. April 2022? Comes in with a healthy gain of 0.14%, which now brings it up to 1.14%. The 1.14% is still from the ~ 2% highs seen in the early days of Steam on Linux as a percentage of the user base, but given the absolute increases in the user base since that time, it’s probably a high point ( or around the top) for Linux games in absolute numbers. In recent times, the peak for Steam on Linux market share was 1.16% back in November.

Seeing a 0.14% bump during the month may indicate that Steam Deck / SteamOS 3 is being tracked as part of the survey, as there have been no high-profile Linux built-in game releases in the past month or any other direct feature for increase beyond the total interest derived from Steam Deck / SteamOS. As for the individual Linux distributions reported in the Steam survey, it still shows Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS with an increase of 0.03%, Arch Linux with an increase of 0.02% and Manjaro Linux with an increase of 0, 01%.

Windows, meanwhile, has a market share of 96.31% on Steam in the past month and macOS of 2.55%. The Linux-specific survey results show that Intel is losing another 0.54% CPU market share now at 57.93% to AMD at 42.06%. In comparison, Steam Windows shows the results Intel with a market share of 68% to AMD of 31%.
