CD Projekt announced on Thursday that it will take over the development of The Witcher 3‘s next generation update that it had outsourced, and evaluates how much extra work the new version of the game needs. Despite how gloomy this may sound, the developer clarified on Friday that the update is not in “development hell”, but did not provide a release window either.
“I’ve been looking at headlines that popped up here and there over the internet, and I’ve seen one that really caught my attention, which is, ‘Witcher 3 next generation delayed indefinitely,’ which sounds like the game is in a kind of development hell, “said MichaĆ Nowakowski, CD Project Senior Vice President of Business Development, during the company’s investor teleconference on Friday.” I would like to state that this is not the truth. There have been many insinuations that we will launch in June next year. or something like that. That’s not the case at all. ”
It is worth noting that the original announcement of the delay of the next generation update was through The Witcher’s Twitter account, which CD Project runs. The tweet stated that CD Project was in the process of developing the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game internally, and that it delayed the game’s release and evaluated potential new dates.
“The game will be completed internally. We are evaluating our time, it requires a bit of investigation – that’s all we say,” Nowakowski explained. “No one is saying the game is delayed for a monumental period ahead of us. That’s as much as I can say about Witcher’s next generation, but I really want to emphasize that fact.”
CD Projekt also clarified the call for the work that the team has undertaken to develop The Witcher 3‘s next generation version internally will not affect the development of the studio’s next game.
Despite all this, the call did not involve any details about when the next generation version of The Witcher 3 maybe actually released, but at least we know for sure now that it will not be June 2023.
