Ubisoft shuts down online functionality for a lot of older games

Publisher Ubisoft has announced that it has shut down online multiplayer functionality for a lot of its older games, many of which can be found on the Wii and Wii U. You can see Ubisoft’s full announcement here.

Of course, this means that you will no longer be able to play online, but the move also extends to disabling unlockable content, player statistics and functionality with Ubisoft Connect. If you have previously redeemed unlockable content on the console, it will remain available unless you reset your game completely. However, PC players get the short end of the stick as unlockable content will be completely unavailable even if you have previously redeemed it.

The company has also clarified that if a game was not transferred from Uplay to Ubisoft Connect in 2020, then all rewards associated with the service will be unlocked automatically.

While the message itself is apparently out of the blue, many of the games mentioned have already been “sunset” years ago. In fact, back in 2018, we reported Ubisoft’s intention to shut down online functionality for more Just dance titles. Although the list includes some previously unannounced titles, the post itself seems more like a public service announcement to clarify that Ubisoft’s plans have now been fulfilled – at least for the Just Dance series.

One of the oldest games listed by Ubisoft was 2005’s Rainbow Six Lockdown, but its inclusion will be relative to the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions, as it did not support online multiplayer on the GameCube.
