Forget chocolate eggs and anthropomorphic rabbits. The best way to spend this Easter weekend is definitely to get XCOM 2 for free from the Epic Store and save the world from aliens tyranny.
Firaxis’ masterful strategy sequel may not need an introduction, but it does get one anyway. Released in 2016, the game took the bold step of assuming you were defeated by alien invaders in 2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and set you the task of building a scraped resistance unit to push your alien occupiers back from the planet. PCG alumni Tom Senior was thrilled with the epic tactical battle that followed, giving XCOM 2 a huge score of 94.
It’s a great offer, though it’s worth noting that Epic’s deal does not include the excellent War of the Chosen expansion, which basically rewrites many of the game’s core rules for an even more spectacular adventure. That said, you can get it at a discount along with a bunch of other DLC in the XCOM 2: Collection Upgrade, all for very reasonable £ 7.99.
XCOM 2 is also not the only game that is free. Securing XCOM 2 from below is insurmountable, an unusual roguelike that challenges players to climb mountains. I have not played it myself, but it boasts a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, and it’s hard to argue when the only cost involved is a piece of hard drive space. Insurmountable has also recently received a major update that adds a tutorial and a new story along with procedurally generated side missions.
In any case, there are plenty of free games to see you through the Easter weekend, though none of the game is particularly thematically appropriate. There may be a few eggs lurking somewhere in XCOM 2, but you probably will not eat them.
