A common concern Call of Duty: Warzone players at the moment are whether they will be able to keep the skins and items they have purchased for Call of Duty: Warzone 2, which is expected to arrive within the next year. Earlier this year, Activision confirmed that it planned to release Call of Duty: Warzone 2 in parallel with the recently announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. Although other battle royales like Fortnite has managed to sustain itself for years now, War zone‘s myriad of technical issues have resulted in developer Raven Software choosing to reduce its losses and start from scratch on a brand new engine.
Due to the change in the engine, many fear that their skins will be lost in the shuffle. In an interview with The Washington Post, the creative director of CoD live ops Josh Bridge noted the technical challenges posed by the many different updates to the game. There is a huge amount of content in the game, which sometimes makes it challenging to find certain elements, forcing the developer to find new ways to make it available. In terms of whether content will be transferred to War Zone 2Bridge noted that this is a “technology discussion”. Call of Duty insider Tom Henderson remarked on Twitter that he had heard that it would be a “pure tablet,” suggesting that skins would not be transferred, which would not be so surprising.

Given the technological challenges of porting things between different engines, possible licensing issues from crossover characters and more, there is a lot that would go into making such a thing a reality. Right now, there are almost no details about the next iteration of War zone. Some rumors have revealed general map details for War Zone 2 and many expect it to be exclusive to the Xbox Series X | S, PS5 and PC, but there is nothing too concrete. It will probably be revealed more this summer as we approach the official unveiling of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
