‘Destiny 2’ Narrative Designer ‘Cannot Stress Enough’ How good next season is

Season of the Risen is mostly over in Destiny 2 at this point. We’re just waiting a bit for the season’s last big event, the Guardian Games, before moving on to the as yet unnamed season 17.

And some specific Bungie employees say it’s going to be a good one.

The most hype-generating tweet comes from a relatively new senior narrative designer, Dr. Hazel Monfortonwho said the following yesterday that got a lot of attention in the Destiny community:

She goes on to say that “the whole team” smashed it and that it contains some of the first work she has done for the game since joining Bungie (previously she wrote for the upcoming Redfall and Dishonored).

I saw a couple of different tweets that repeated her feelings, including one from VFX artist Ben Platnick, who is equally excited:

And here is Vince, Performance Test Engineer:

I mean, yeah, it’s clear Bungie employees will be jazzing about their own work, but I do not know, it still makes me pretty excited about what’s coming when I remember a similar Bungie-based hype about, what was supposed to be arriving with the Witch Queen and it was actually delivered.

Season 17, however, is more of a mystery considering how little we know about what’s to come, especially in terms of its narrative. We know some building blocks. A new dungeon will arrive. Iron Banner gets a major overhaul. But past that? The story seems to be able to go in a number of directions.

Will we directly build on the events of Witch Queen, and will the story have anything to do with Savathun’s corpse, her missing ghost, and the witness’ awaiting arrival? Will we take a detour and revisit unfinished story lines and learn what Calus is doing with the missing Leviathan? Will Ana Bray build Rasputin a body? Will Eramis be frozen up? The possibilities are endless, and really there are not many clues embedded in the game right now about what will definitely come next. I believe in most of those stories will continue in the future, but specifically during season 17? No idea.

Previously, in terms of gameplay, the biggest addition would be the arrival of yet another 3.0 subclass. Solar 3.0 seems to be the prevailing theory, but Bungie has not yet confirmed it. This Thursday we get a big TWAB showing some sandbox changes on the way and maybe we might confirm the 3.0 element type. Or maybe it will be saved for later.

All of this contributes to the idea that yes, season 17 seems to be one to look forward to. Considering that previous seasons after the expansion have been Forge, Dawn and Chosen, I have some pretty high hopes for what’s to come.
