Google Assistant is still not quite ready for Samsung Galaxy Watch4

The latest update is just a tease

The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic are two of our favorite smartwatches, but even though they’ve had exclusive access to Wear OS 3 since their release last year, they’re missing another great piece of software – Google Assistant. Today, Verizon released an update to its Galaxy Watch4 Classic support page, which says that a system update with Assistant support is available now – but Google says that the assistant is not actually being rolled out at the moment.

Verizon says Assistant compatibility is rolling out in this latest update, though Google tells us that Google Assistant functionality is not yet getting dirty. The update also includes some other tweaks, including a new Smart Switch backup and restore process that should address some of the obviously silly round involved in moving your watch between phones and a shortcut to measure your body composition through certain Samsung Health messages.

Earlier this year, Samsung said Assistant support, a notable omission in the otherwise stunning Watch4 series, was still planned “in the coming months.” Given that it’s only April, that special promise may still come true – even though we’re wondering what the heck it’s taking so long, given that the watches themselves have been on the market since August 2021, and we’re already hearing rumors about Galaxy Watch5.

You can download the update to your Watch4 or Watch4 Classic right now, even though the app your watch needs for Google Assistant functionality is still not available through the Play Store. We may hear more about it on Google I / O – which launches in just a few weeks.
