PlayStation 5 finally gets Variable Refresh Rate support this week

Sony has confirmed that it will finally start rolling out Variable Refresh Rate support for PlayStation 5 in the new days, with patches to implement the feature across a variety of games – including Spider-Man and Resident Evil Village – that will follow “in the coming weeks”.

VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors to PlayStation 5’s graphical output, and helps, as Sony puts it in its advertising post, to minimize or eliminate visual artifacts, including image stimulation and screen tearing issues .

“The gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes are rendered seamlessly, graphics look sharper, and input delay is reduced,” it adds.

VRR will be activated through a console update over the “next few days” according to Sony, and 14 titles will receive patches to introduce VRR support in the “coming weeks”. These are:

  • Astro’s Legerum
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Fate 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • SMUT 5
  • Gudfald
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Sony says these are “just a few” of the PlayStation 5 titles scheduled to receive VRR support, noting that some future titles may also be shipped with the feature in place. In addition, this week’s update will allow gamers to apply VRR to unsupported PS5 titles, which Sony notes “may improve video quality for some games.”
