After almost spreading the news ahead of the launch, Sennheiser has officially announced their new Momentum 3 True Wireless earphones – a sequel to the acclaimed Momentum True Wireless 2 – which will be available from May 10th.
The third excursion to Sennheiser’s flagship earphones offers adaptive active noise reduction and a new look more reminiscent of the Sennheiser CX Plus. On the audio quality side, Momentum 3 will support the usual AAC and SBC codecs as well as aptX Adaptive, which could help it compete with the LDAC codec found in the Sony WF-1000XM4.
In terms of price, the Sennheiser Momentum 3 True Wireless will only cost $ 249.95 (around £ 200, AU $ 300) – making them around $ 30 cheaper than the standard MSRP for the WF-1000XM4.
Finally, if you plan to use them to take work calls, Momentum 3 will have three microphones per bid, which Sennheiser says has led to noticeable improvements and “crystal clear quality”. We’ll have to test it ourselves, but on paper it can help elevate them well above previous models and close to the top of our top genuine wireless earphone list.
Analysis: Sennheiser’s new earphones have MOMENTUM
It’s important to have choices when it comes to your audio technology, so it’s nice to see Sennheiser pushing with Momentum earphones – even against the Sony WF-1000X series, which has dominated the landscape for the past few years.
What Sennheiser offers with Momentum 3 is a real competitor to the WF-1000XM4 at an even cheaper price. Sony is likely to drop the price of 1000XM4 to match another price drop likely to arrive on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but in a few months, Sennheiser has a real chance to break into Sony’s lead.
If there’s anything disappointing about the new earphones, it’s that Sennheiser has done nothing to improve battery life – it’s still stuck at 7 hours per day. charging with an additional 21 hours in the case. However, the Sennheiser added wireless charging, which is a nice touch.
These earphones do not support spatial audio formats like the Apple AirPods Pro or Sony WF-1000XM4, but if previous models are something to go by, their stereo sound should be as good or better than anything you’ve heard from Sony or Apple. earplugs.
