It’s a bit rare to see a modern RPG choose a comic book aesthetic over the earthy palettes and strict realism we have become accustomed to. But the first gameplay trailer for Asterigos: Curse of the Stars shows us that a little touch of Pixar might not be that bad. The action RPG from the new outfit Acme Gamestudio has just been listed on Steam with a release window for ‘Fall 2022’.
The game plays you as Hilda, a warrior who goes in search of her father in the city of Aphes. The city and the myth in the game are “inspired by” Greek and Roman myth, but looking at some of these monster designs and the scientist type in the lab coat, it’s clear that the developers are not limited in style.
I contacted developer Acme Gamestudio to find out more about the gaming world, and they confirmed that “Asterigos is not an open game. It’s more like a hub-based and semi-linear game.” The world appears to be dense rather than scattered, situated in the city of Aphesus and the surrounding wilderness.
The developer also confirmed that “there are many choices to influence the story of both the main story and side missions,” but refused to reveal more for fear of spoilers.
The fight looks pretty fast and gives me flashbacks to Kingdoms of Amalur, which is no bad thing. You will be able to use two different weapons at once, and I especially like the elegant Shaolin-style pairing you can make with the spear.
The trailer shows a variety of boss-type enemies, including a giant blue crocodile in a swamp, a fat guy with an oven head in a dungeon, a large warthog-like beast. According to the Steam site, there will be over 22 bosses throughout the main story and side quests – a far healthier and more sensible number than the approximately 200 terrorizing players in it. Other things great RPG from 2022.
Asterigos looks set to hit Steam this fall.
